How Do You Choose a Perfume?
Is it time for a new perfume? Whether you’re shopping for a new perfume for yourself or as a gift, you might enjoy some basic information to help you navigate the world of perfume.
Perfume Intensity: Eau de Toilette vs. Eau de Parfum
Is it perfume, Eau de Parfum, or Eau de Toilette? The distinction arises in the percentage of aromatic components. In general, the higher the concentration, the more strong and long-lasting the perfume. However, keep in mind that the fragrance’s longevity and intensity are also affected by the quality of the ingredients, as well as other factors. A good designer perfume with a modest concentration can outlast a cheap perfume with a high concentration. So, what are the concentrations of the varying perfumes?
- Perfume (Extrait de Parfum – P) with its 15-30% of fragrant ingredients in its composition represents the strongest available form of a fragrance. You only need a small amount, and it will last for several hours.
- Eau de Parfum (EdP) contains 8-15% of fragrance essences in approximately 85% alcohol. It is the most common type of perfume, along with Eau de Toilette. It remains on your skin for 4 to 8 hours.
- Eau de Toilette (EdT) with its 4-8% of fragrant ingredients in about 80% alcohol represents the most suitable form of perfume for everyday wear. It lasts for approximately 3 to 4 hours on the skin – then you usually need to reapply.
- Eau de Cologne (EdC) contains 3-5% fragrant ingredients dissolved in approximately 70% alcohol. It only lasts around 2 hours, so you’ll have to reapply it frequently. Although it is commonly linked with men’s aftershave, there are a handful of Eau de Colognes intended for women.

Perfume Based on the Wearer
We distinguish perfumes for women, men, childrens’ perfumes, and unisex perfumes. Each one of these categories has its own characteristic types of perfume:
- Perfumes for women often contain floral notes such as jasmine, rose, orange blossom, or lily of the valley. Fruity notes, powdery notes, vanilla, and spices are also quite typical for perfumes for women.
- Perfumes for men usually have an intense woody note accompanied by fresh citruses and spices. Lavender, oriental aromas, leather, and tobacco are other popular notes in men’s aftershaves.
- Unisex Perfumes are universal Perfumes designed for both women and men. Unisex fragrances often have a strong citrus note as well as a woody note or aquatic and green notes.
- Perfumes for kids are usually sweet perfumes with the aroma of sweets, bubble gum, cola, caramel, or juicy fruit. These sweet notes are then mixed with the delicate aroma of flowers or fruits like coconut.
Perfume Composition
Head, Heart, and Base of a Perfume
Have you ever observed that the majority of perfumes change as you wear them? This is due to the fact that their composition usually consists of three elements that constitute the so-called olfactory pyramid:
- The head of the perfumes (the top notes) are what you can smell shortly after application. They’re usually light citrus or herbal notes designed to catch your attention. The head dissipates in a matter of seconds or minutes, giving and gives way to the heart of the perfume.
- The heart of the perfumes (the middle notes) start developing after about 15 minutes and last for 2-3 hours. The heart usually contains notes of flowers, as well as fruit, spices, or green notes.
- The base of the perfumes (the base notes) can be detected after about 30 minutes and lasts for serval hours. The base of the perfume is typically composed of woody components, musk, amber, as well as oriental notes like incense or vanilla.
Many perfumes are based on this olfactory pyramid concept, however there are other perfumes with a linear composition that smell the same throughout.

Types of Perfumes
Perfumes are classified as aldehydic, amber or oriental, aromatic, citrus, woody, chypre, spicy, leather, floral, oriental, fruity, aquatic, or green based on their aroma. These core groups are further subdivided into subgroups, such as fruity floral perfumes, woody chypre perfumes, oriental spicy perfumes, and so forth. Simply select the appropriate group in our filter to find the ideal perfume for its type.
Popular Perfume Notes
Even while only a few ingredients are usually specified on the package, most perfumes contain several dozen to several hundred ingredients. Some are more noticeable, while others are hardly detectable with an inexperienced nose. Jasmine, rose, iris, oud, vanilla, and violet are among the most popular perfume ingredients. How to Try on Perfume Correctly
We recommend following these basic criteria while testing perfume samples at home or in a perfume shop:
- Try the perfume on your own skin first. Perfume responds to the pH of your skin, thus it smells different on a paper strip or on another person. Use the test strips in the perfume shop to become familiar with different perfumes, and then try the best ones on your skin.
- Don’t put too much emphasis in first impressions. Allow some time for the smell to develop. The top notes of a perfume only last a few minutes, but you want the smell to last the entire time you wear it.
- Do not try more than three scents at once. More perfumes will not be discernible by your nose.
How Do You Apply Perfume?
Have you discovered the best perfume? Then we’ll go over how to wear it appropriately so that it develops to its full potential, as well as how to store it so that it lasts as long as possible.
How Do You Wear Perfume? Application Basics
- To get the most out of your perfume, spray it on pulse spots like your neck, wrists, the hollow of your elbows or knees, or the region behind your ears. If you spray perfume on your wrist, avoid rubbing them together because this can ruin the fragrance and cause it to evaporate faster.
- Apply some vaseline, cream, or oil to the areas where you want to spray your perfume. As a result, the perfume will not be absorbed into your pores and will remain much longer.
- To enhance the smell of your perfume, combine it with other scented cosmetic products from the same brand, such as a perfumed body lotion, shower gel, or deodorant. Look for perfume gift sets that have all of these products in one box.
- Warm pulse spots will cause your perfume to develop more strongly, but it will not endure as long. As a result, you should also spray it on colder parts of your body, such as your earlobes or knees. The perfume will then last considerably longer.
- You can also extend the life of the perfume by spraying it in your hair from at least 15 centimetres away. But be careful: putting perfume to your hair on a regular basis can cause it to dry out, which is why you should use a specific hair perfume.
- If you don’t want to spray the perfume directly on your skin or if you don’t want it to be too strong, spray it in the air in front of you and walk through the perfume cloud.
- If you know your Eau de Parfum or Eau de Toilette won’t last all day, keep a perfume miniature, a refillable fragrance atomiser, or a perfume sample in your handbag and reapply as needed.
Perfumes for Every Occasion and Season
The art of wearing a perfume is not just about applying it correctly, but also about choosing the ideal perfume for a certain occasion or time of year. This is how you choose a perfume based on when you intend to wear it:
- For daytime wear, choose for a lighter, more refreshing perfume. A citrus or floral scent will be ideal, and an Eau de Toilette or Eau de Cologne will provide the desired intensity.
- Evening events necessitate a heavier, more powerful, and seductive scent. An Eau de Parfum that lasts throughout the evening is the best option.
Every season has its own type of perfume, just as lighter perfumes are more suited for the day and stronger ones for the evening. In general, the colder the weather, the more stronger, sweeter, and spicier the scents available – and vice versa:
- Spring scents are typically light, fresh, and full of spring flowers such as lily of the valley or jasmine.
In the summer heat, the best summer perfumes should smell pleasant and invigorating. Citrus scents, as well as aquatic and green notes, will perform well.
- Autumn perfumes feature a variety of spicier, heavier, and sweeter notes. Vanilla and cardamom are typical autumn notes, as are rare woods like sandalwood and cedar.
- Winter perfumes are the most sensual and heavy. They blend oriental tones with sweet fruit and gourmand scents.
The finest perfume for any occasion is always the one that corresponds to your unique preferences and present mood. Remember that the most important thing is that you really like it.
How to Keep a Perfume Fresh for as Long as Possible
Do you keep your favorite perfume on a shelf in your bathroom or even on a window sill? Wrong. Heat, humidity, and even direct sunlight can all be harmful to your perfume. Store it in a dry, dark, and cool location to ensure that it lasts as long as possible. Keep it in its original box and in a room with a temperature no higher than 20 degrees Celsius.
